Challenge

The use of traditional polystyrene and Styrofoam for packaging is now recognised as a real problem. These materials are totally unsustainable due to being non-biodegradable, unrecyclable, taking 500 years to decompose, taking up masses of landfill space, and releasing harmful ozone into the atmosphere. And yet – tonnes of the stuff is still produced every year and continues to land in landfill. According to data from Washington University, the amount of Styrofoam cups produced in one day alone could circle the Earth if lined up end to end. And this is without the swathes of it used in packaging.

Now, lots of business are looking for alternatives to these materials, not least because they will now be subject to the new UK Plastic Packaging Tax.

Action

We never stop looking for sustainable solutions and alternatives for our clients, and we know this one is so important because unsustainable packaging can reflect badly on brands and incur unwanted costs.

So, working closely with our supplier, we can now provide innovative Mushroom Packaging. Perhaps surprisingly, Mushroom Packaging can be just as effective in terms of performance as polystyrene and Styrofoam.

It works by using the natural flexibility and strength of mycelium (the material structure of fungi), and then mixing it with agricultural waste such as hemp, cork, and sawdust. Our supplier works with local farms to take away waste from hemp, corn, and timber production, reusing natural by-products from nearly every industry.

Impact

This innovative use of natural materials and waste has created an eco-friendly, home-compostable alternative to plastic foam which cuts down on the huge volume of landfill. Plus, there’s no need for any chemicals or industrial processing.

The process supports the Earth’s carbon cycle by removing carbon atoms during the lifecycle of the product, which is then slowly released back into the soil once composted (within 40 days).

Packaging your products in this material will demonstrate your commitment to sustainability and avoid the need to pay the plastic packaging tax. It’s a delicious win-win
