Employee engagement, motivation, performance and productivity; all high agenda topics for the leadership in most organisations and businesses.
It’s a complex area, with so many factors in play, but the evidence is that employees who feel valued, perform better. They’ll go the extra mile, stay and develop careers in the business and create better customer experiences leading to improved business outcomes. And let’s not forget that a business’s workforce also has the power to be their biggest ambassadors and advocates of the brand. If neglected, poorly treated and under-valued though, they can do the exact opposite.
But how can companies ensure staff do feel valued?
As pointed out in an article by the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS), recognition of staff – team and individual achievements is key. The article suggests ‘’Human beings are hard-wired to crave recognition. When we know that others are seeing us in a positive light, our brains release a few chemicals into our systems that make us feel good both physically and emotionally. This feeling encourages us to engage or move towards the source that triggered it’’. The article likens this to the feeling of a medal achieved by a marathon runner. Yes, they have the sense of achievement in their hearts, but the giving of a medal enables them to wear the achievement on their chest. It’s a public acknowledgement and notice of their blood, sweat and tears, as they head home from the marathon to cheers and admiration from others.
People working in organisations are no different. We all want to be recognised for achievements and if we’ve done something particularly spectacular; long years’ service, won an award, successfully launched or created a new product, achieved targets or broken records, received a fantastic testimonial – why shouldn’t this be publicly celebrated? This acknowledgment and recognition can and should be carried out through regular one-to-one line management appraisals and team meetings. But there’s also long service awards, employee of the month prizes, and awards nights.
