Straws, plastic and cardboard cups and now beauty wipes. Slowly but surely, single use is becoming a buzzword for anti-social and unethical.
Leading high-end department store Selfridges is making a real statement around their commitment to sustainability in this move. Many of their customers will use beauty wipes as part of their daily routine. According to the Standard, Selfridges undertook some customer research prior to the ban and found that less than a fifth of consumers knew that it can take 100 years for plastic-based single-use wipes to fully degrade.
Daniella Vega, Director of Sustainability at Selfridges, said: ““Single-use beauty wipes have been a staple of many beauty drawers, but they are incredibly harmful to the environment. During a recent Selfridges team beach clean, we saw first-hand the impact they have on our waterways and beaches and we were even more motivated to remove them from our stores.”
This move is just the latest in the move away from single use products, and this must surely send out alarm bells to the promo industry. Creating promotional products which are sustainable is a must, if the industry is to be well, sustainable.
The way to do this is twofold;
First, through quality. Producing promotional items people will want to keep, use, re-use and even repurpose due to their high quality, good design and appealing look.
And second, it’s through innovation. Looking at exciting, new to market products, which are earth friendly and lead, rather than follow the trends.
At Marke our products do both. Our catalogues are filled with high quality, functionable, appealing products consumers will love. And we also lead the way with eco-innovation, supplying socks made from fishnets, notebooks made from ground coffee waste, sunglasses and straws made from wheat. And much more.
