Challenge
Charity volunteers give up their time to help others, and the outcome of that work is clear when it comes to the magnificent work of Macmillan. Their inspiring team of runners undertake running events throughout the year to raise money for their nurses.
But Team Macmillan had another agenda too. They wanted to fundraise and awareness-raise, but not at the expense of the environment. So, they wanted to switch their branded running clothes to more sustainable fabrics. As a charity, the main problem historically was cost. For a long time, Virgin Polyester was the only fabric possible within their budget, with the eco-friendly Rpet out of their reach.
Action
We are always looking for solutions, and monitoring costs, suppliers, and materials. So, when prices of sustainable fabrics started to come down, we were quick off the mark. Knowing how keen Macmillan were to become more sustainable, we started working on a new range of running vests and t-shirts, branded, comfortable and practical, and sporting a major difference in how they impact the planet.
Impact
When it comes to Rpet vs Virgin Polyester, the differences in sustainability terms are vast. Production requires a staggering 90% less water, saves a huge amount of plastic from going into landfill, used an impressive 70% less energy, and results in a reduced carbon footprint of 65%.
All this meant that we helped Macmillan save;
- 6,390,000 litres of water on running t-shirts and running vests (equivalent to 2.5 Olympic size swimming pools)
- 576,000 from going into landfill
- Substantial sums of money compared to previously priced sustainable items
- We were delighted to help kit out such a team of champions, in a sustainable outfit they could be proud to run in.
